HGTV Rehab Addict Star Says Save This Historic Minneapolis Home

HGTV Rehab Addict Star Says Save This Historic Minneapolis Home

HGTV Rehab Addict Nicole Curtis, host of the home improvement DIY channel show, wants to save this old house in Minneapolis, Minnesota. So do many people in the neighborhood.

HGTV Rehab Addict star Nicole Curtis told Fox 9 News “The entire structure of the original house is still there.  Just because it’s old doesn’t mean it’s not valuable anymore.” Even with a popular HGTV star fighting to save this old house it is destined to be torn down.

The owner has tried to sell the home and a developer wants to buy it and the house next to it and build a four-story 45 unit complex.

Since the house was built in 1893 by master builder T.P. Healy, many locals have fought to keep the house for its historical value. HGTV Rehab Addict Nicole Curtis even offered to buy the house for $400,000, but was outbid by the developer.

Currently it is split up inside and is a boarding house with not much of the original historical trappings still intact.  The exterior shell is there so I agree it could be beautifully restored. Continue Reading

This Yurt or Octobie is a prefab kit that is energy-efficient with insulated ceilings and walls.

Mortar Washed Houses

Mortar Washed Houses

Mortar washed houses.  I am gaga over Old World style homes and one technique to achieve the look is mortar washing.  It changes the appearance of exterior brick.  Here are six example houses that are mortar washed.  One house has a Pastel Cote finish with Boral bricks, another is white-washed brick, and there is an example of a lime-washed wall that gives it a vintage look.

Mortar

This home for sale in Birmingham, Alabama reportedly is mortar washed over full brick and the curb appeal is soft, inviting, and earthy.  Love, love the green trim and I can stare at this house for a long time and not be bored.  Read on while I stay here and stare.

One way to achieve the look of Mortar Washed Houses per ehow, is “Brick masons mix a slurry of sand and cement to create a paste they sponge over bricks. A textured cloth, such as burlap, is rolled over the cement paste to create texture. If you have old brick on your home’s exterior and are looking for a way to refinish it instead of replacing it, or if you have brand new brick that you’d like to infuse with Old World flair, then mortar washing is an inexpensive way to add a touch of fab to your home’s facade.”  I am thinking this or something like it could be used on an out of date fireplace that is red brick with black mortar too to create the old world style inside.

Mortar
This is my favorite exterior I can find to date.  Per Things That Inspire this home’s exterior was built with Boral Bricks and a special finish called Pastel Cote was applied to give it the texture and color.  Hubby wonders why the columns are white.  I think it is to tie in the bars above the windows.  More on Mortar Washed Houses……….

Tumbleweed Tiny House Cottages

Tumbleweed Tiny House Cottages

Tumbleweed tiny house cottages.  I’ve written about tumbleweed tiny houses before under small space living and noticed they have a few new cottages.  Tiny houses are still popular.  The cottages are adorable.

Find a little land and a little money and buy a Tumbleweed tiny house cottage.  Build a studio or one to two bedroom.  Their Harbinger cottage house plan cost to build is estimated at $26,000 for 310 sq ft or $33,000 for 404 sq feet.

The Harbinger cottage kitchen includes a dishwasher, microwave, full sized range and oven, and washer/dryer combo.  A small fireplace is in the main room. Harbinger house plans include the option of a cathedral ceiling or full loft over the main room for extra space.

Many Tumbleweed tiny houses can be built on wheels like a trailer to take it to go. The Harbinger cottage house plan design is for a permanent foundation.

My ideas for Tumbleweed tiny house cottages are retirement options, in-law quarters, and guest house.  A college graduate can’t find a job yet living quarters too.  See more about this idea in Converting Sheds into Livable Space – Miniature Homes and Spaces.

Dutch Colonial Gordon Van Tines Kit Home

Dutch Colonial Gordon Van Tines Kit Home

Dutch Colonial is a Gordon Van Tines Kit Home.  Van Tines kit homes are often mistaken for Sears Catalog homes.  I wrote briefly about Sears Catalog homes in Ranch Style House Time Traveler where I want to go back in time to the early 1900s to buy a Sears home for the Back To The Future price of $650-$4,400.

This Dutch Colonial is however, a Gordon Van Tines mail order Kit Home.  If you live in the Haddam, Connecticut area it is on the market for $549,000.  Built back in 1929, the house has 3 bedrooms, 2 full baths and 1650 square feet on 3 acres. I fell in love with the house at first glance.  The exterior blue color melts my heart. The porch entrance and whimsical half-moon shutters seal the deal.  I want to wear it around my wrist like a charm bracelet.  I don’t say it lightly.  This Dutch Colonial exudes charm.

The house still has the original kitchen and bathroom features. The listing details on OldHouses says this Dutch Colonial is a “Classic Gambrel Kit Home.” Continue Reading

House Plans Photos Cape Cod,Cottage,Traditional,Ranch

House plans with photos features an Ericson Southern Plantation house plan from houseplansandmore.  It’s 2014 and l am dreaming of this cottage type house.  As dreams go, three dormers on top, abundant columns, and an across the front of the home front porch and wide entrance steps makes for “undeniable curb appeal” as seen on houseplansandmore.

A fan window above the front door, oh yes please, completes the dream.  What I love about this Ericson Southern Plantation house plan is that it can be for different house styles like a cabin or cottage plan where I found it.  A Ranch style house, Farmhouse, Cape Cod, New England, Colonial, Traditional, and Waterfront house styles.

Some great decorating and design ideas are also another reason I like the Ericson Southern Plantation house plan.  If you read Housekaboodle you may already know I like yellow painted walls, elegant furnishings, and a comfy cozy appearance.  Let’s take a lookie because this design has great decorating inspiration.

House Plans With Photos for Cape Cod, Cottage, Traditional, RanchPicture perfect Ericson Southern Plantation home with three bedrooms and two full baths.  The homey great room with vaulted ceilings has a built-in entertainment center and fireplace shown below.  Not shown but also included with the house plan is walk-in shower, double-bowl vanity, whirlpool tub in the master bath and walk-in closet.  I am staring at the fan window above the front door.

Walt Disney Birthplace House Chicago Illinois

Walt Disney Birthplace House Chicago Illinois

I just heard about the Walt Disney Birthplace House preservation project on the news and excitedly started digging around; only me and other homie nerds do things like this.

I was surprised to learn about a Kickstarter campaign to restore the home to its original state called The Walt Disney Birthplace Preservation Project announced this week on Walt’s birth date, December 5th.

Walt Disney’s father Elias was a carpenter and built the home located at 2156 North Tripp Avenue Chicago, IL.  Walt was born on December 5, 1901 in the upstairs bedroom of the home and lived there until he was four years old.  Interesting that Walt had three older siblings, Herbert and Raymond, his brother Roy Disney whom we all have heard of was 12 years older than himself, and a younger sister Ruth, two years younger than Walt.

A very in-depth history by Yesterland reveals Walt’s father, Elias, moved the family from Florida to Chicago to work on the construction of the Worlds Columbian Exposition of 1893.  With this world fair background, Walt’s father no doubt influenced Walt Disney’s future dreams about a fairytale place come true like Disneyland.

Walt Disney Birthplace House Chicago Illinois

To think it all began here.  The home as it stands today was up for sale and sold this past June.  It has been added to and changed from its original state by many owners.  While the house was up for historical landmark consideration in Chicago, the owner at the time feared it would be hard to sell with all the stipulations. Continue Reading
